According to Wikipedia Counterfactual is a way to denote something could have been if some pre-conditions are assumed to be true. This idea was later developed extensively by Judea Pearl and influenced his work in Bayesian Belief Network. This is also a way to utilize the property of symmetry-breaking in logic to perform logical inferences.
