Mediawiki Navigation

MediaWiki is a free and open-source software used to power Wikipedia and other websites that use the same technology. It is a web-based collaborative platform that enables users to create and edit content, organize information, and manage communities.

One of the key features of MediaWiki is its navigation system, which allows users to easily browse and find the information they are looking for. This is accomplished through the use of a number of different tools and features, including:

  • General look and feel: The common parts of a MediaWiki page
  • Navigation: Moving around from page to page
  • Articles: The main content of the wiki
  • Searching: Finding articles by keyword
  • Categories: Organizing similar articles into groups
  • Namespaces: Dividing the wiki into sections

We’ll also briefly discuss writing and editing articles, just enough to get you started. Module 4 will cover this topic in detail.

Mediawiki Login and Logout

User Pages

The login process in MediaWiki is relatively straightforward and involves the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the login page: This can typically be found by clicking on the "Log in" link in the top right corner of the page.
  2. Enter your username and password: Type your username and password into the appropriate fields on the login page.
  3. Click "Log in": Once you have entered your login credentials, click the "Log in" button to log into your account.

If you do not have a MediaWiki account, you can create one by clicking on the "Create an account" link on the login page. This will bring you to a page where you can enter your desired username and password, as well as any other information that may be required.

Once you are logged in, you will be able to access all of the features and functions of the site that are available to users with your level of access. You can log out of your account at any time by clicking on the "Log out" link in the top right corner of the page.

Watchlist

A watchlist is a feature that allows users to keep track of changes made to pages on the wiki. When you add a page to your watchlist, you will be notified of any changes made to that page. You can use this feature to keep track of pages that you are interested in or that you are actively editing. To access your watchlist, you will need to log in to the wiki and click on the "watchlist" link in the top menu. From there, you can view a list of all the pages you are currently watching and see what changes have been made to them. You can also add or remove pages from your watchlist from this page.
