Logic Frame
Problem Statement:
We aim to change the community's behaviour towards the plastic waste issue by building a circular economy as a business model that will give value to the community using plastic waste processing technology and creativity to make valuable and innovative textile products

GOAL:
To build a plastic yarn factory in Indonesia that can distribute the yarn back to the community, where community members can then make valuable textiles for selling domestically and internationally.

Rationale
The ability to generate value from the plastic is limited without the infrastructure for a circular economy within the community.

Assumption
There is available funds and equipment to enable the plastic exchange to realize the suggested solutions.

The community members are capable of learning and operating a successful textile manufactoring business.

INPUT ACTIVITY OUTPUT
Data collected from Plastic Exchange about plastic types, quality and volume.

Knowledge and understanding of the textile business and its economics.

  1. Acquire financial support
  2. Develop training and mentoring program
  3. Establish marketing support and partnerships

Businesses establish full production operations in Indonesia.

Reduction of Indonesia's carbon footprint. Supply local weaving mills with recycled plastic yarn.

OUTCOMES IMPACT
Models and designs of the economic workflows, and proposed ICT solutions. Proof of concept with the development of beautiful textiles. Setup of business infrastructure for the success of the circular economy.

Support for the goverment's mission to boost Bali's economy. Increased the amount of plastic collection programs with more purpose and incentives.

HDX Team 6 - Plastic Exchange)

Project Overview

Towards a Strong and Circular Economy in Indonesia

In 2021, a challenge project was launched by a team consisting of 8 enthusiasts to reduce plastic pollution while at the same time strengthening the economy and national identity. The team introduces how a circular system could become the key to leveraging the impact of waste pollution by raising the value of the plastic waste and giving back to the community the opportunity to be more entrepreneurial, responsible and resilient through the economic approach.

Project Plan (Work Packages)

Work Package 1

Framing

  • Internal discussion on the scope of the project
  • Meeting with Stakeholder Mr. Janur. Discussing of Needs & Aspirations
  • Framing & Scoping of sub-project “ICT Admin, Monitoring and Tracing App”
  • Framing & Scoping of sub-project “Extended circular solution”
  • Framing, Scoping & Presentation of combined circular solution:
  • Phase 1: Proof of Concept & Initial Prototype
  • Phase 2: Full Protype for G20 presentation
  • Phase 3: Full circular solution

Work Package 2

Research

  • App :
  1. Present plastic for rice exchange initiative: Stakeholders, Supply Chain?
  2. Other plastic Exchange initiatives: How many plastic exchange initiatives are there already in the country? Others involving plastic<>rice? What else is exchanged for plastic (schooling etc.)? How are these other exchange initiatives managed? Manually or ICT?
  • Circular Solution :
  1. Local marine plastic detection and retrieval: Are there any associations or groups already active in this area?
  2. Local plastic recycling: Are plastic types filtered? What kinds of plastic recycling already take place in the country? What is the process? Any processing of plastic into yarn? Anyone already importing plastic yarn from other countries?
  3. Weaving and Fabrication: Villages specialising in traditional weaving and fabrics/ Eco-friendly fabric manufacturers? Digital Data sets of traditional fabric patterns and models? Digital loom? AI Specialists (GAN).
  4. Stakeholders: How many stakeholders in the circular process? How different from the present plastic<>rice exchange process.
  5. Overall process: Business process and rationale? Fit with the Resilience Index Framework
  • A search and selection of partners is made to achieve the most effective solution, fitting the technical, logistical, financial and creative needs and parameters of the country
  • The potential partners are approached for collaboration.

Work Package 3

Definition

  • App :
  1. Define and Map present Plastic<>Rice Exchange (Stakeholders, Process etc.)
  2. Define the problems and pain points / areas for improvement with ICT
  • Circular System :
  1. Define and Map the Stakeholders / Flow in the circular system
  2. Define and Map the Technology / Flow in the circular system
  3. Define and Map the logistics / Flow in the circular system
  4. Define the Business Model / Process in the circular system
  5. Define and Map the whole circular flow
  6. Define accompanying educational and awareness program
  7. Identify any potential pain points

Work Package 4

Ideation

  • App:
  1. Brainstorm the features of the proposed ICT-based Admin / Monitoring /Tracking app, based on research carried out by the team, and defined areas for improvement.
  2. Integrate any new functionalities proposed for the app (e.g. additional exchange items, Plastic Exchange Allocation and Award Scheme)
  3. Create blue-print for new ICT-based Admin / Monitoring /Tracking app (users, flow, data-sets, display, navigation etc.)
  • Circular System Phase 1 :
  1. On the basis of research by the team, and definition of the process and required resource, brainstorm and create a full scenario for Phase 1 of the fishing net/plastic recovery and up cycling process. This would cover all stakeholders and project flow and would include:
    1. Plastic waste identification and retrieval
    2. Plastic waste processing > yarn
    3. Fabric/tapestry production
    4. Educational and awareness approach

Work Package 5

Prototype,Test & Present

  • App :
    • Create (part)functional prototype or mock-up of the Admin / Monitoring / Tracing App
    • Test the App with stakeholders
    • Make iterative improvement on the basis of user testing feedback
  • Circular system Phase
    1. Prototype ‘run-through’ of circular system from plastic waste collection to fabric production
    2. Integrate ICT Admin / Monitoring / Tracking app
    3. Present the integrated solution with prototypes of the app and the fabric
