Data archival is the process to move data that is no longer used to a different storage for preservation. Archive data consists of old data that is important but is no longer used but may be used in the future.

Benefit of data archiving

Primary storage is required to have sufficient read/write speed and it is usually expensive, while archive storage cost less as it could be stored in lower performance storage. Furthermore, archive storage could reduce the data that must be backed up resulting in efficiency.

Data archive vs backup

Data archive is different from data backup, the main difference is the purpose. Data archive is a data that rarely accessed but still available while data backup consist of important information that could be restored when there are issues.
